ALCFINALcolorOctober 2009

From the President

Greetings Fellow Members,

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. I guess with all the rain and cool temperatures summer didn't seem to start until mid-August, but here we we are in October.

I would like to begin my tenure as President with a huge thank you to Rosemary Howlett. She was an amazing President, guiding the league to several key accomplishments: the annual Chatham High School scholarship; linkage with Chatham borough Public Arts Council; the annual Chatham Library show/exhibit and of course, the day to day leadership of our Art League.

For 2009/10 I plan to continue to support the following goals:

- to increase membership

- to continue to raise our visibility in the Chathams

- to share the talent of local artist members by exhibitions and community events

- to utilize dues and exhibit fees to facilitate the "Art League of the Chathams" scholarship   fund.

I look forward to working with all of you this year and encourage you to share not only your artistic talents, but also, your time in one of the many board or chairpersons roles.

New Committee Volunteers

Frank McDonough.has volunteered to be our new hospitality chairperson.  He will be overseeing the hospitality of our receptions and making sure that we have enough refreshment donations from our members.

Frank will also be taking reservations for the Lundt-Glover Gallery.  Please contact him for more information and available dates.

ALC Members who are part of a group of artists can also have a NON MEMBERS exhibit at the Lundt Glover gallery at any time during year  – the non members  will just have to pay $15 each per show.  So if there is one member and 5 people in their group  the member can have the show for free - but the other 5 artists will have to pay $15 each for total of $75.

Ed Schuh will be taking reservations for the display case and an “artist of the month” to display two pieces of their work.  The work can be left on display for longer than one month.  One piece to be exhibited in the Hallway outside the Administrative Office and another inside the office.  If anyone is interested in either of these venues, please contact Ed at 973-635-7247.

Joseph Cornell (1903-73) was an American artist; born in Nyack, N.Y.

He is best known for his shadow boxes made of found objects, maps, photographs, engravings, and other materials. Influenced by SURREALISM, these constructions are personally symbolic and evocative.

IN THIS TRADITION - ALC Artist Frank McDonough will be giving a demonstration and brief history of  Shadowboxes (California Job Cases) while workshop participants start to work on their own shadowbox.  This Workshop will cost $30 and each participant will receive their own Shadowbox.

(Antique Printer Drawer - valued at min $20) as well as small items the will be place into the boxes.  Workshop participants are ENCOURAGED to bring personal memento’s that can be places in a 1 x 2 area in shadowbox.Workshop limited to 15 people.  Please Rsvp pbarkhorn@verizon.net

Members’ Spotlight

Philla Barkhorn was named  the New Jersey Ambassador to the Portrait Society of America.

Charles Heller recently received the Emeriti Award at the NJ Visual Arts Center Annual Members Show for his 1946 photograph "Barn Talk, CA Ranch, MT".

It is with sadness that we have to report that Margaret Corsello has passed away.  She was a very active member of our group as Treasurer for 5 years.  She always made an effort to participate in all of our shows and attend most of our functions.

New Members

Chatham Members, please welcome Shridevi Kannambadi to the Art League of the Chathams.  Her address is 51 Huron Dr, tel # 973-665-0460.  Her email address is arun_k@comcast.net and she is a water colorist

Last minute Additions

Paulette Skibel, one of our models, has waived all her modeling fees and would like us to donate her $40 fee to the Chatham High School Senior Scholarship we give. So far that’s $80, and if she shows up for her next two sessions we’ll have a total of $160 by year’s end.

We are piloting a new program for Chatham High School art students to show their work. Eric Hreha, a Chatham High School art teacher, is working in collaboration with Frank and Philla to set up the first show in December. Selected High School students will fill all twenty spots in the Lundt/Glover gallery with the best of their work. We are very excited to support the young people of Chatham in this way.
